Randy Grimes – “First Responders Ambassador” – Heroes’ Mile

Randy GrimesRandy Grimes is a former professional football player whose career spanned ten years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His devastating football injuries would eventually lead him into a 20+ year addiction battle with painkillers and opioids.

Grimes now uses his inspiring story of recovery to help others who have stumbled down the same treacherous paths of addiction. For more than 12 years, Grimes has worked in the addiction industry to help victims of drug and alcohol abuse. His work as an interventionist would catapult him into a founding advocate for Pro Athletes in Recovery. His message has been heard loud and clear through numerous media outlets including NFL Network; Anderson Cooper, CNN, Sports Illustrated, and Fox News.

Grimes recently authored a book titled Off Center, a memoir of his career and addiction journey. His diligent work with US Border Patrol officers in his home state of Texas has revealed a dire need for addiction recovery work with our nation’s First Responders. Upon realization of this prevalent issue, Grimes contacted his old friend John Picciano, CEO of Oglethorpe Inc., to create a game plan for First Responders suffering from addiction.

Oglethorpe’s Health Care facility – Heroes’ Mile, in Deland, Florida specializes in assisting veterans with mental issues and addiction. Picciano realized the similarities between the Veterans and First Responders and with that – the Heroes’ Mile FIRST RESPONDERS PROGRAM was born. This vital program created by Picciano and Grimes has one mission: To assist all First Responders (police, sheriffs, border patrol, and fire and rescue) in their personal battles with addiction and mental health issues.

Getting started with Heroes’ Mile

first responders program

Heroes’ Mile is a Substance Abuse, Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) treatment program located in a tranquil lakefront setting in Deland, Florida. The center’s parent company, Oglethorpe Inc., recognizes that in military culture, no one understands Veterans better than another Veteran. For that reason, a majority of our staff and counselors are Veterans.

Our mission is to guide individuals from self-defeating thinking and behaviors to a higher level of social, emotional and moral awareness. We are pleased that this mission has been accomplished in helping hundreds of well-deserving American military heroes who have given so much to our country.

Oglethorpe recognizes that there was another group of American Heroes whose mental health is often overlooked and misunderstood: our FIRST RESPONDERS. Fire Rescue, Police, Sheriffs Department and Border Patrol; much like our military are the frontline source of defense in our country. Realizing the problems in military and first responders with military backgrounds, Oglethorpe created, the Heroes’ Mile First Responder Program. Our programs, much like the ones we have developed for our Veterans are geared to confront the problems and the challenges facing these brave individuals.
